SERVICE IS HIGH PRIORITY FOR COMPUTER BUSINESS
by Amy Masterson
Reporter
Rick Baldwin, owner of a computer repair/installation company in the
Village of Lancaster, received a phone call that made him realize how successful he really
was.
When the Better Business Bureau called him asking for his membership,
he had not expected it. But apparently, he had fans.
"They contacted me. One of my potential clients inquired
about my background, and there were no complaints listed under the Bureau. The
Bureau found that surprising, since there are always the occasional complaints," he
said.
The Better Business Bureau keeps a record of consumer complaints.
In the three years Rick Baldwin Office Systems and Service has been open, the
company has received only positive feedback.
He believes he knows the reason. It's due to the company's
customer-oriented atmosphere.
"They like that I care about them. I'm out for their
benefit, not mine. If someone needs work done and could get it for a cheaper price,
I would recommend the cheaper price," he said.
Baldwin worked at Larry Smith Office Equipment for 16 years and was
completely content there. He enjoyed both his co-workers and clients. However, when
IKON bought out his office, things changed. IKON, he said, was less
consumer-oriented than he like to be, and customers started to call him at home, asking
for his personal business. Since he could not ethically do that on the side, he
began to consider opening his own business. The only thing keeping him from that
goal were the people he worked with, whom he liked personally.
However, as more calls came, he finally took the risk and handed in his
notice of resignation to Icon. He does not regret the decision.
"I like what I'm doing. I treat the customer the way I would
want to be treated," he said.
Baldwin became interested in computer technology after taking a course
at his high school, West Seneca West.
"I found it interesting and I did well," he said.
"I aimed toward that."
After high school , he took courses at Erie Community College and the
State University of New York at Buffalo.
The goal now: keeping up with the ever-changing technology, which is
nothing like it was back in the 1980s.
"Computers were just up and coming, not like now. It's a
constant endeavor, because technology is constantly changing."
